Lizzy Shackelford is a foreign affairs columnist with the Chicago Tribune and a lecturer at Dartmouth College. She previously served as a career diplomat in the US Department of State, with postings in Poland, South Sudan, Somalia, and Washington, D.C. Earlier in her career, she was a lawyer with Covington & Burling, focused on international trade and litigation.

Lizzy is the author of The Dissent Channel: American Diplomacy in a Dishonest Age, winner of the Douglas Dillon Book Award, and co-author of the forthcoming book How US Foreign Policy Really Works, to be published by Stanford University Press.

At Dartmouth, Lizzy teaches:

• Violence & Security: A multidisciplinary introduction to the causes, consequences, and possible prevention of armed violence between groups.

• Dissent & Democracy in the World: An introduction to the role of dissent in society and its relationship to democracy around the world, from the colonial era to modern day.

• International Law: An overview of how the international legal system works and how it impacts international politics. The course examines the principles, foundations, and institutions of international law, and why and when states do — and don’t — abide by it.
